The crude is heated to a temperature between 215F and 280F(100C-137C) as it is fed into the crude distillation unit. Thisallows salts to be removed from the desalter, which can behazardous and caustic to some equipment. As the desalted crudeis fed into the atmospheric distillation tower, it is heated totemperatures of up to 750F (400C), where the vapors and liquids separate based on the differing temperatures at whichthey condense. The oil would thermally crack, or break apart, attemperatures exceeding 750F, impeding the distillation process.
